Swithland Woods – Sunday 29th August 2021

Swithland Woods

Yesterday was Swithland Woods. A girl really can’t have too much of a good thing. Mum and I are having a wonderful time going from wood to wood. Yesterday morning, after we checked out of the accommodation we’d been in, we went for another circuit of Everdon Stubbs. Then we drove up to Leicestershire for where we are staying for two nights. I won’t bore you, but the place we were in had a long-standing booking – we’re heading back there again from tomorrow night.

Busy Car Park

Anyway, Mum said we could go to Bradgate Park, but as she was expecting the main car park to be busy she headed for the one by Cropston Reservoir. That one was busy too. However, a little further along the road is Swithland Woods – boy that is some wood. It wasn’t as deserted as Badby Woods but it does have some well marked trails, making it easier to enjoy. There are over 170 acres of woodland, so you really could get lost in it if you wanted to. There were only a few cars in the car park, which meant it was perfect.

Blue Route

We followed the blue route, which was well marked and simply wonderful. There are other routes you can follow too, so we might go back to do another one. In the spring the wood is known for its bluebells and is supposed to be beautifully carpeted with them. Sadly, Mum won’t take me then as she’s allergic to bluebells. If you have a couple of days, it would be a great place to stay near as there are several equally good places, such as Beacon Hill and of course Bradgate Park itself – I’ll tell you some more about those in the next day or two, depending on which we fit in.

Oh yes, Mum said to tell you the car park is only £2 for the whole day, so you can always go to find a local pub for lunch and then go back again in the afternoon.

Love
