Saturday 12th July 2014 – A Long Drive

D'Artagnan picnic

It was a long and largely uneventful drive yesterday. The scenery was much the same as it had been on the outward journey until my Mistress passed Denver and headed into the mountains, but by then the thunder and lightning had started so I don’t think she really took all that much in. They stopped for a picnic on route and to get some shade my Mistress sat with D’Artagnan on the back of the car. He said he quite liked this picture of himself, although was glad he’d finished eating when it was taken. What my Mistress had forgotten to mention was the number of oil well they passed on route. Little wells were in the corner of every field amongst the crops at one point. It seemed so incongruous, but that’s probably because she isn’t used to seeing things like that.

The other thing she was not expecting to see was a man taking his piglet out of his pick-up truck at the service station and taking it over to the grass to go to the toilet in the same way that we are normally taken at stops. It was the squealing and oinking which drew my Mistress’s attention when he went to pick it up again and put it back in the truck. I don’t think it wanted to go.

Until she met the bad weather my Mistress was really enjoying driving. She was listening to country music, which seemed appropriate. To be fair for much of the journey there were only two radio stations to choose between and in one place there were none at all. It shows just how uninhabited some areas are, so very different from here. We think rural is the nearest major city being 12 miles away!
