I never thought I would see the day I would be writing this. I can swim and I actually quite like it. Yesterday we had a major breakthrough at the pool, I stopped panicking. The result was that I could keep my head out of the water and I didn’t keep swallowing water and choking and could concentrate on moving my legs. Ok, so I really am some way off getting the hang of steering, but I made massive progress on my swimming and even started to push away from the side on my own when I felt ready to go. When I got out I couldn’t stop smiling I was so proud of what I’ve achieved. As I said to my Mistress if I can overcome my terror of the water then she should be able to cope with flying in an aeroplane. I was worn out when I got home and went straight to sleep, but I would probably have to gone to sleep even if I had not been worn out. My coat does not dry as well as Aristotle’s so I made up for it by soaking my Mistress’s jeans by wrapping myself round her legs. She was less than impressed, but after doing so well in the pool she would have been hard pushed to tell me off, so I just kept on smiling and cuddled up close to her.
I know we don’t say this very often, but we need some rain. The water butt is almost empty and my Mistress wants rainwater to water the organically grown vegetables. It defeats the object of being completely chemical free if she then has to water them with water which contains chemicals. I said she’d have to set up a complicated system off the kettle and get the steam to go through some clever tubing and condense to water them, but she said as a project it would never catch on. She is doing a rain dance instead – and she thought my idea was stupid!

AD, your idea is not at all stupid. I’m not a techie, though, so we bought a still. We use it mostly for drinking water and cooking. It is a dry season here as well. We have about 180 liters left in our barrels for the garden. A rain dance is not a bad idea, either.
