Sunday 22nd December 2013 – The Home Straight

We are very much into the final straight approaching the birth. As of yesterday Shadow’s temperature has started to be taken 3 times a day. No fun for her, but exciting for us. As soon as things start to happen I will stop writing a once a day summary and start posting news as it happens. That’s my main job in this whole process and the best way I can help. I am the main liaison dog and I’m very proud of my job.

My Mistress spent yesterday doing lots of practical things like moving her bed into the utility and setting up the big pen in the office so it can be thoroughly disinfected before the puppies need to use it. Then she made the biggest batch of her breakfast cereal I’ve ever seen. She has also made some puppy formula to a recipe which she has been advised works wonders with weak pups and that is now safely in the freezer ready for when it is needed. It involved boiling some liver so that you add the stock to the mix. Apparently the amino acids from the stock help to prevent some of the problems puppies can get if they are only on formula. It’s just a precaution. After having a time last year when Shadow couldn’t feed the puppies my Mistress wanted to be ready in every way possible. I think she’s ready to feed a whole army of puppies if she needs to. The only thing she did not get as far as was sorting out the camera, so that is the job for today.

What was funny yesterday was that Tesco’s arrived early with the food delivery and my Mistress was out. My Master couldn’t believe the amount of food she’d ordered. She did reassure him that it is intended to last a couple of weeks or more and not to be eaten all at once. He was rather upset as they had substituted his favourite crisps with some he didn’t want and he’d sent them back. Things like that can spoil a chap’s day.
