My Mistress has been diligently working things off the long term ‘to-do’ list that she has. She is now on the jobs that have long since been put on the ‘too difficult’ pile. All I am going to say is ‘Velux blinds’! Actually, that is probably not all I’m going to say. It rarely is. So far, we have had manual blinds fitted in James’s bedroom by the builder. The ceiling is quite high so we bought a special pole to be able to reach up and open and close them. What we did not buy was a leg extension to make any of us tall enough to reach using the pole. For the year since we moved in, it means James has had his Velux blinds closed all the time. That doesn’t entirely account for why he rarely opens his other curtains but he’s a boy and to be fair the room is fairly dark even with them open.
Step two was to buy electric blinds to replace the manual ones. That was the easy bit. Of course, what my Mistress didn’t think about at that point was how she was going to get them fitted. The builders had gone and as I’ve already explained we are the death curse of handymen. The ones we have booked have either had serious injury or left the business altogether.
Step three was to buy a double ladder as my Master got it into his head he could do it. My Mistress dutifully bought the ladder, then we got the ‘simple instructions’ out of the box. They may be simple if you have a PhD in home maintenance, but otherwise we are definitely of the opinion that they chose the wrong word. Given that my Master would have to work at a very odd angle from the top of the ladder, my Mistress concluded that this wasn’t a job they should attempt.
Step four was to search on the internet for people who fit Velux blinds. Although my Mistress didn’t find that exactly, she did find a company that will get quotes for work for you, so she filled in all the details. Two days later they came back saying that there wasn’t anyone in our area.
Now we need a step five. My Mistress is thinking of talking to a local builder, but given he is probably busy with other work, she has no idea whether he will be able to fit it in. And all to fit two Velux blinds!
