‘We’re going out for a family meal’, my Mistress said yesterday. So I got myself ready. I had a good wash and even got one of the girls to do behind my ears. By the time they set off at 11am I was ready by the front door with my car harness and lead. Well, my Mistress just looked at me and said, ‘What are you doing?’ ‘What does it look like I’m doing?’ I said through what of my mouth I could move while holding the lead. Then she understood. ‘Oh, Alfie! I didn’t mean…’ No, well why did you use the word family then. Aren’t I part of this family? By that time the girls were sitting forlornly in their crates so I went to try to cheer them up and we all had a good howl together.

I do wish people would think before they open their mouths. Pets do have feelings. We regard ourselves as part of the family and rather hope that you do as well. I’m just hoping the same principles do not apply when it comes to Christmas presents else there are going to be a lot of very unhappy pets on Christmas Day. Of course we’d like turkey and all of the trimmings, but what we really want is presents. We’re just like any other child at heart really.

Now I know I still have some of the treats left that I had for my birthday, but that isn’t by my choosing. It’s because they have been put on a shelf that I cannot reach. Megan has offered to climb up and get them, but I think that’s because she wants to eat them. I shall just have to wait until I am allowed to have them. It’s tough being a dog.
