Alfie’s walk turned out to be quite funny yesterday. I wasn’t there to see it, but I heard both sides of the story from our Mistress and Alfie. Our Mistress got an inkling of what might happen when she saw lots of horse boxes parked along part of the airfield. They got out of the car and started walking. Alfie was dragging his paws and didn’t want to go anywhere. He said he was fine at home and really didn’t need any exercise. Our Mistress told him as he hadn’t been out much recently the fresh air would do him good and he needed to walk at least to the little sign that says you shouldn’t go any further (we normally carry on past that bit – but don’t tell anyone!). He cheered up when he found some manure to eat, but soon got bored again and asked if they could turn round. She coaxed him and they went a little further before she finally gave in and turned round. They had covered about 100 metres of the journey back to the car when she heard the hunt’s horn blowing and the dogs barking and realised they were coming her way. Now, not wanting to meet a whole load of galloping horses and a pack of dogs that would really have unnerved Alfie she decided she needed to get back to the car before they got too close. Like it or not, Alfie found himself urged into a jog and then a full scale run. At that point she was glad they had not walked much further from the car than they were. They made it back and all was well, but she says next time she sees the hunt are parked nearby she will pick a different spot for dog walking. Alfie thought it was all rather exciting and seemed to think I would have like to have joined the pack of dogs. Our Mistress was glad she wasn’t with me as she thought I might have been a little over-excited – can’t think why!
