My poor Mistress is not having much luck with the garden. Oh she tries hard, but those green fingers seem to be eluding her. The parsnips instead of getting bigger have now been in too long and gone woody. I know you learn by your mistakes, but my Mistress is very upset about that one. It’s the apple tree she is most upset by. Obviously there was the one I killed by peeing on it. She did think that one was doing quite well. However, one of the others was doing very well and had a lovely crop of apples. She was really rather pleased with it. However it was the lovely crop of apples that has proved its downfall. While we were away they proved too heavy for the trunk of the tree and despite (she thought) being adequately tied up, the trunk has broken in two and she is not trying to see if the tree can be saved at all. Part of the blackberry bush seems to have died while we were away too, but that certainly wasn’t from weight of fruit this year. She is now talking about a new project to radically redesign the garden. I don’t know what it’s going to involve but I’m presuming I’m not supposed to be helping. She has talked about putting a pond in, but I can’t really see that happening. I’m hoping that she isn’t going to bother with anything that needs to be kept alive as she doesn’t seem very good at it when it comes to plants. The funny thing is there are quite a good crop of pears on one of the pear trees, but she doesn’t actually like pears! I’m guessing it’s not going to matte too much if I try one of them.

Mum decided last year that the solution to our gardening problems was 13 tonnes of gravel.
