It is with a heavy heart that I have to tell you that another of our number has died recently. Caros was 11 years old and sadly had a tumour in his throat. He’d lived a good life. We hadn’t actually met but we’d been in touch for a while and I was hoping to see him later this year at the fun day. That takes our number down to 48 before Hendrix arrives next month. Although that includes 2 of Caros’s brothers and sisters who I don’t know about first hand. I hope they are ok.
My Mistress is always sad when she hears of news like that. It did mean she was being particularly loving towards me as the eldest of the family. A point that came in rather handy when she discovered that I had not stopped at eating the odd blueberry and had inadvertently destroyed one of the bushes. It was an easy mistake when you have less dexterity and one I would normally have been in a great deal of trouble for. She has done her best to create barriers around the other plants, but for the one in question I fear it might be too little too late and I am just a little remorseful.
On a brighter note there was an important and thankfully successful rescue mission yesterday. A young goldfinch came into the office and then began to panic as it could not find the way out. My Mistress was totally awe struck with such a beautiful and delicate creature, but she did manage to wrap the bird emergency towel gently round it with wings closed and carry it to the window to rest and take off when ready. I have to say the colours on the wings were magnificent. It flew to a neighbouring tree for a longer rest before heading off, so hopefully there was no more harm done than a little bruised pride.
