Monday 22nd August 2011 – A month to go

It’s a month today that the puppies are due. My Mistress has already started to realise that in the weeks which follow she won’t be getting an awful lot of work done. Firstly there will be caring for Shadow and if necessary the puppies. Then there will be the visitors. Visitors are already lining up and booking to come to stay. It’s going to be a busy and exciting time all round. Then there will be the prospective owners to talk to and to visit the puppies. If they are like this family they won’t come in ones and twos. When my humans came to visit me when I was still with my mum, at one point there were seven of them. There was of course my Master and my Mistress, then there were the children and then there were my Master’s parents. My Mum was very tolerant of having them all tramping through our pen and it does mean I have some lovely puppy photos in the album of the kids holding me and my brothers and sisters when were really very small.

I think when we have all the visitors Megan and I will either be on door duties, showing everyone where to go, or we may have to sit quietly out of the way twiddling our paws so that we don’t get in the way.

I was finishing putting together our Club newsletter yesterday and there is a lovely article about one of my friends, Annie. I couldn’t believe it when I got to the bit that said that when one of her families chickens escapes from the pen, it is her job to not only round it up but to carefully make it sit down and wait until her human came to put it back in its pen. I know we are working dogs, but I’ve never heard of us working with chickens before. I thought birds were for chasing not herding. Well done Annie.
