Squirrel Riot
I have to warn you, there’s going to be a squirrel riot and it’s going to start soon. The squirrels have been a very important part of Mum’s world for the last year and a half. In recognition of the pleasure they give for Mum watching them, and of course me chasing them, Mum has been buying them four types of food. They get peanut kernels – or more to the point they eat the ones which were for the birds. In addition to those they have their own feeders with walnuts and hazelnuts in their shells. That helps their teeth as apparently they are one of those animals whose teeth keep growing.
Squirrel Mix
Finally they get a ‘squirrel mix’ of loose food. It has things like sunflower hearts and dried banana in it. The squirrel mix is the second of the foods Mum puts out which has run out and, due to moving, is not being replaced. She also used to give them peanuts in shells but they ran out and the shop was out of stock. In the hope of deferring the riot, Mum is putting extra shelled peanuts for them. However, I have to warn you, it is only a matter of time before the riot begins. What is going to happen when the other foods run out?
Worried
What is worrying me is that they may come looking to see what else they can find. What if they like my food? I can’t share that with squirrels. Mum has told me not to worry, but that’s easy for her to say. My food is kept nearer to the back door than hers is. A dog has to protect her food supply. Now probably isn’t the time to reflect on the times I’ve stolen their food when I can get my paws on it. That might just make them feel entitled to a reciprocal arrangement.
