The Pet Loss Guide
I want to tell you about The Pet Loss Guide by Millie Jacobs. It’s a lovely new book that comes out today. Our lives are much shorter than yours so it is very likely at some point that you humans will go through losing a pet. It is, of course, very hard when you do. It can take a long time to grieve for another living being that you’ve been close to. We go through it as well, so we share those feelings. Although we all grieve differently in our own ways we do all grieve. Many of us don’t know how to handle the feelings or what we should do.

Supporting someone at a time of loss
Although primarily aimed at those who are themselves going through the loss, this lovely book also contains advice for the people trying to support them. There is a thirty-one day plan to help the bereaved human through their immediate time of loss, but there is far more than that here. The book contains heart-warming and heart-rending stories of others who have been through losing a pet as well as some very practical tips and advice. It also has space to write down how you are feeling each day, which can in itself help. If you are a pet reading this then don’t forget you can work with your human to share how you feel too.
Don’t be afraid to grieve
Grieving is important and you need to give yourself time and space to work your way through the process. Remember you are vulnerable and don’t make any rash decisions to take in every homeless stray you hear about just to fill the void. When it comes to adding new members to your family, research them thoroughly and choose carefully.
Not just pets
Reading the helpful advice in this book, it is probably just as valuable to someone who has lost another human as much as it is a pet. The grieving process is very similar and has the same stages and difficulties. What is different is that those around you expect you to grieve for a human, but one of the important points this book makes is that you can be left to feel guilty grieving for a beloved pet, because non-pet people simply don’t understand.
The Pet Loss Guide by Millie Jacobs is published by Orion and is available on Amazon or through any bookshop. The hardback is priced at £14.99. There’s a Kindle version for £9.99 as well.
