Friday Flashback – Friday 20th April 2018

Friday Flashback

Alfie has told me I have to paw the diary back after today. I’ll still be doing Monday and Friday as usual, but he grumbled something about my taking over and he was not happy. Anyway, at least he let me do a Friday Flashback first.

This is from when Alfie was just five months old and still growing:

2006

It would seem that the car has shrunk. Now my mistress’s car wasn’t large but we did both fit into it. I could sit facing forwards or sidewards quite comfortably. Now that the car has shrunk I can’t lie facing forwards as I fall off the seat and my seatbelt is a bit restrictive for sitting up. So there is nothing else for it but to lie sideways which involves having my right front paw round the gear stick and my head on the handbrake. It wouldn’t be too uncomfortable if my mistress could only learn to drive without changing gear. I have offered to do it for her but she says she would rather do it herself, some people are so ungrateful. Don’t say I didn’t offer. She is even starting to think she may have to change car just for me, although she also muttered something about going out and leaving me behind but I’m sure she can’t have meant that!

Then this made me laugh from the following year. I do wish I’d known Alfie when he was still a puppy.

2007

Do they not know how hurtful it can be, to come out with statements in an argument that they don’t mean? The argument wasn’t actually with me but she said “If that’s how you are going to be, I’m giving your sandwiches to the dog.” In these circumstances you don’t pick up on the fact that yet again you have been referred to as ‘the’ dog rather than ‘our’ dog, you simply get excited at the prospect of an additional portion of food and smoked salmon sandwiches at that. You run and stand by your bowl and the next thing you know is that they are laughing about it, kissing goodbye and your master is off to work carrying his sandwich box. Not only that, but the sandwiches are still in it. Oh that’s just fine. No word of apology. No “Oh Alfie, let me make it up to you by giving you some of the chicken I was going to have for lunch”, nothing, not a word. It really is too much for a dog to bear.

Well that’s all from me for today. You’ll be back in Aristotle’s paws tomorrow while I get a weekend off. It’s odd, but I quite like working so I don’t know what I’m going to do with my time.

Love Wilma
