Being British – Thursday 5th April 2018

Being British

Oh how Alfie is going to laugh when I tell him all the stories from this trip. I know that when Mum moved to Belgium there were all sorts of things which confused her. Well, it’s happening again now. Being British can be a huge obstacle when in a foreign country. Somehow in England we seem to do everything differently. There are obvious things, like driving on the other side of the road, and there are less obvious things. Today we parked in a car park which had signs on all the walls. As Mum didn’t understand them, she parked in the middle of the car park in a space with no sign.

She looked the word she didn’t understand up – it was an instruction to part facing forwards in the space. When we came back to the car I said to her, “I don’t like to mention this, but do you notice anything odd?” Yes, hers was the only car in the whole car park which was parked the wrong way round. She hadn’t assumed the rule covered the spaces in the middle, but clearly it did. Why that was the rule we have no idea, but before she went to do the rest of the shopping she did move the car to a different space – the right way round!

Stairs

By the end of this we are both likely to be fitter than we were, or at least have exercised different muscles. It turns out that living on a hill has it’s downsides, or upsides if you are looking to get fit! From the parking to the house there is a flight of stairs. Then the house itself is built over three storeys. The kitchen is on the middle floor. As Mum is already finding, that’s a lot of stairs to carry all the shopping up. By her own admission she needs to get fit, but I’d rather we were doing it outside in the fresh air and not just taking in the shopping.
