Shadow was eating a little less enthusiastically yesterday so she is getting closer. She’s losing more of her hair underneath too, ready to be able to feed the puppies. Aristotle was taking advantage of her strong maternal feelings by getting her to wash his ears. He was enjoying it so much that every time she stopped he tapped her with his paw to make her carry on. He is also seeing it as his responsibility to keep an eye open for trouble and has stationed himself at the front window where he can see better. Our Mistress has told him that if the puppies haven’t come by Saturday then he will go to kennels on Saturday afternoon as from that point she won’t be able to give him as much time for walks. I don’t mind going without walks so I’m easier to please. As long as I still get cuddles I’m fine.

Last night our Mistress started the preparations to make homemade puppy formula milk in case it’s needed. She boils some liver so that she can use the water in it and I have to say that from our point of view it smelt great, but she was far from keen! We each had a little of the liver once she’d drained off the water she needed. She won’t do the rest of the preparation just yet, but at least the preparation of the stock, which takes a couple of hours, won’t be problem.

They had another go with the Doppler and came to the same number of 6 that they had the day before. Of course it could just be she’s found Shadow’s pulse points, but hopefully that wasn’t the case. She doesn’t think so as the rate of beating was faster than Shadow’s heart rate at those points. She says if she understands the anatomy of Shadow it probably means that two of them are in the breach position, but that is fairly normal for dogs so hopefully not a problem.

You still have time to join in the guessing when the first pup will be born. Leave a comment to tell us when you think. So far we have:
