It’s Ari here and for the avoidance of doubt it’s Shadow I’m talking about. Our Mistress was feeling all generous yesterday and so came back from Pets at Home with no less than two of the very big chews. She knows there is no point buying Alfie one. Shadow has ‘dogged’ him into submission to such an extent that he won’t so much as touch one, just looks at them longingly. Anyway as I’d proved I was brave enough to take on my mum our Mistress thought that she and I could have one each. (Mum and me that is – our Mistress prefers cake!) Our Mistress gave Mum hers first and then once she carried it off, knocking into the walls and furniture on route she gave me mine. I looked up at her full of wonder and said, “Me, really? There’s a whole one just for me?” I was beside myself. I gave our Mistress a big hug and then started to try to get my mouth round the chew. You are not going to believe it. Mum had put her chew down and come back to the kitchen to collect mine. I was distraught. It isn’t as though she was planning to chew either of them right now, she just lay down in the middle of them guarding her trophies against all-comers. Devastated is not a strong enough word to describe how I felt. I looked at our Mistress, in the hope she could sort it out, but she just shrugged and said, ‘You know what you’re mum’s like.’ Oh I do. I most certainly do. My best hope is that she forgets to take one with her when she goes in the other room and I can be quiet enough chewing for her not to hear me. I’ll be for it if she actually catches me. I’m starting to understand how Alfie feels.
