Thursday 9th April 2015 – 4 weeks to go

(1)1Dog1Vote colour

There are just 4 more weeks until the election. Today I want to write to all you young people out there. Please don’t listen to some of the populists out there who are saying there is no point voting and your vote won’t count. Voting is both a privilege and a responsibility. We dogs are still deprived the right to vote. Watching people taking the vote for granted and treating it as an irrelevance is painful to watch when it is a right denied to you. It is not so very long ago that voting was not available to all humans either. It is only in relatively recent years that the vote has been given to both sexes and to all social groups regardless of their financial situation. People have lost their lives winning the right to vote for you. Not only that but each one of you can make a difference. In the last election 35% of eligible voters did not vote and yet the biggest party only secured 36% of the votes that were cast. What that really means is only 24% of those eligible to vote actually voted for them. On that basis all the non-voters were more than enough to have changed the whole election vote and could have, on their own, been enough to bring a party such as ours to power. If you don’t like what the parties stand for then start your own party and stand up for what you do believe in.

If you do nothing, you are at serious risk of finding yourself governed by parties who most certainly don’t have your best interests at heart and it will be your own fault. You can’t say later ‘I didn’t vote it isn’t my fault.’ It absolutely will be your fault if you don’t vote. You might be the one who could make the difference and bring about change. If you don’t know what all the parties stand for, then find out. Don’t leave it to someone else – they might be leaving it to you!
