Friday 21th March 2014 – So much for spring

So yesterday was the first day of spring and true to form it was cold, windy and wet. I think the nice weather we had last week might be it for this year. Of course it would be very sad indeed if that were proved to be true, but I’ve grown somewhat pessimistic about the English weather from the last winter. At least there is blossom on some of the trees and there were some daffodils until the wind blew them over. My Mistress was in a bad mood as she left her favourite pair of gloves somewhere the day before and spend yesterday trying to remember where she might have left them. She is hoping to go and ask in a couple of places today on her way back from taking Aristotle swimming.

Our Mistress is beginning the complicated job of trying to identify a suitable puppy to introduce to the UK to bring in a new breeding line. Obviously she is still hoping that Megan will have puppies, but in addition to Megan’s line we need more breeding lines in this country if we are to get things right in the future. It will take years before we have enough dogs here to enable matings in the UK to be normal and to even get close to that we need to have lots of different genetic lines so we aren’t all too closely related. When you think there are only 51 in the country and Shadow is mother to 18 and sister to one and Queenie is mother to 16 and grandmother to 4, that only leaves 10 that are not immediately related to them and I am one of those. Even some of the other 9 are very closely related to one of Shadow or Queenie! Anyway, the job involves looking at every girl in other countries who is breeding and then looking at her pedigree compared to Shadow’s and Queenie’s. She can only do a few at a time before she starts seeing dogs before the eyes, or at least the names of dogs.
