Wednesday 15th January 2014 – Day 18 in the little puppy house

Oh the irony! Just as we are ready to start trying the puppies on gruel, Shadow is for the first time, since the day they were born, leaking milk everywhere. Of course it may not last, but it is certainly good news while it does. It also makes it more likely that my Mistress will consider having a litter from her next year. She was starting to think that maybe it was not the right thing to do.

The pen was made ready yesterday. The shape it is this year is going to involve using a lot more newspaper and will be more work for my Mistress but it will give the puppies plenty of space to grow and develop. It will also make it possible for the whelping box to go in a corner as their sleeping area without it being too much in the way and without any puppies getting stuck down the side of it. The first toys to go in were some sent by Dickens (Bumble) on of their brothers from last year and Aristotle went in personally to supervise how everything was arranged. He is so excited about meeting his siblings. He’s also trying to help his mum out with the excess milk! When she did feed the puppies, even though my Mistress made her lie first on one side and then on the other, there was still some puppies crying for more at the end – just not as many. The whole process was much more enjoyable for my Mistress and there was much less crying. She may wait another day before trying to move them to solids but she will still need to do it fairly soon. She would start a little at around three weeks anyway and that is Saturday.
