Monday 6th January 2014 – weigh in and video

There are two interesting challenges at the moment, quite apart from the need to supplement the puppies at some of their meals. Firstly, the boys have reached the weight we would normally remove the roll bars inside the whelping box. However, the girls have not. At the moment as long as my Mistress is not too far away when one of the boys gets stuck, which happens regularly, she is on hand to ease him out by sliding the vet bed from underneath him to give him more room. She wants to give it at least another day so that Cuddles is a little larger before they are removed. When they come out she has to watch proceedings more carefully again for a few days until the puppies are big enough to fight back.

The second dilemma is over weighing the puppies. This is the point that normally we have to move from using the scales to using a pillowcase and weighing hook. The puppies are usually too willing to rock around the scales and look as though they are going to launch them off the worktop at any minute. However, this litter all seem nice and calm so far and no one seems to mind being weighed. Chekov is going to be too big to fit in the bowl before long but from early observation they are a lovely quiet litter – unless they are saving it all for later!

Today’s weights then – Chekov is a lovely chunky 1030g having gained 64g. Casanova is 1000g having added 60g. Cracker is 954g having added 68g, Cinderella, whose time on the bottle is being rationed due to excess enthusiasm, is 934 having added 724g and Cuddles is still way behind at  64g. The gains are dependent on supplement as well as milk from Shadow.
