I started singing happy birthday to the pups in turn, starting with Cinderella just before midnight. Of course their ears are not open yet, so they didn’t hear a word of it, but they say it’s the thought that counts.
The start of last night was very restless and my Mistress wondered if she was ever going to get any sleep. However after a while, Shadow decided she wanted to sleep in with the pups and was very settled, which we hope means that her milk is improving again, but we will know more as the day progresses. As Shadow was very settled my Mistress was able to get some sleep from about 2am. The biggest problem at this stage is that in moving round Shadow would sit or lie on a puppy. Of course she would not do it intentionally but when you are trying to manoeuvre and there are six furry creatures swarming round you, it is far from easy. It was gone 7 by the time Shadow needed to move so it wasn’t so bad.
We are getting close to the point that the roll bars will need to come out of the pen. That is the one drawback of the whelping box we have, ideally at this stage we would be able to move them up and in slightly so that the pups could get under without getting stuck. Chekov has already got his head stuck a couple of times. At the moment it is easily solved by gently pulling the vet bed out of the way to give him a little more room, but it’s only a matter of a day or two to that no longer being effective.
