The forecast for yesterday was ‘heavy rain’. What we actually got was ‘very heavy rain’. My Mistress having looked at the options concluded that whatever time she and Megan went out for their long hike they were going to get quite wet. It was a useful exercise at this end of the winter. She learnt a number of things. Firstly, her boots leak and are in desperate need of being rewaterproofed. Secondly, the hat attached to her Dryzabone coat leaves her rather less than bone dry. The driving rain meant she could see nothing out of her glasses particularly given the rain in her hair was dripping down her face as well. She had to put her glasses in her pocket and watch the world through unfocussed eyes. Her third learning point was that she owns waterproof trousers for a good reason, but they only actually work if she’s wearing them rather than if they are hanging on the hook at home. Now given she has a wide brimmed waterproof hat that does up under the chin, waterproof trousers and all the equipment to waterproof her boots there really is no need for it to happen again…is there?
She swapped her wet clothes for whatever came to hand – that turned out to be orange trousers, a purple t-shirt and a favourite jumper which should have long ago gone to the clothes bank as it’s lost its shape… completely! I only tell you this because in the post she received a marketing leaflet to subscribe to the magazine Glamour. I kid you not. Either they are watching her and think there is still some hope or they have a very bad sense of humour.
When she went out again she put on her brand new lightweight waterproof jacket, only to find out that there is a fault in manufacture and the lining of the sleeve does not match up to the outer and it can do nothing but twist uncomfortably around her arm.
Jobs for the weekend – waterproof the boots and cut and re-sew the waterproof jacket!
