Thursday 5th September 2013 – Caterpillars

caterpillars stage 2I will never again underestimate a caterpillar. The children’s book ‘The Hungry Caterpillar’ should be under the horror section. Hungry caterpillars are very very dangerous. I told you that my Mistress had removed the purple sprouting broccoli in an attempt to curb the problem and stripped away a few of the worst outer leaves off the cauliflowers, well the picture shows the skeleton of a cauliflower plant which is all the caterpillars have left behind. It looks as though a swarm of locusts has been through.

You would think that was bad enough but it doesn’t stop there. They are taking over everything. The hosepipe is green, it’s now covered in caterpillars. My Mistress’s trouser legs are red, you’d think they’d be safe, but no she came in from watering the plants last night to find that caterpillars had come in with her. She looked up at the ceiling of the office, wondering what the big mark was and …it’s a caterpillar. How did it get there? The journey from the plant would be like running a marathon to a caterpillar. This is the caterpillar equivalent of Day of the Triffids. They are taking over and none of us is likely to be safe.

To cheer me up last night we went for a lovely walk. Ari and Shadow came so we could have a bit of a run together and it was just perfect. It’s the best time of year of walks as the crops have been harvested and we can run across stubble fields after unsuspecting rabbits. It’s the best time of year for us. We can have a great old time and cause no damage at all. Ari isn’t supposed to be running like that but once in a while doesn’t do him too much harm and it certainly is good for the spirit.
