This morning I really thought my luck was in. I’d had breakfast and my after breakfast chew and I’d just gone in to the kitchen for a drink of water. Up to then it was a perfectly ordinary morning. Then there it was. Half a bowl of food left completely unattended. Well what is a dog to think? I work on the basis that you can never be certain where the next meal is coming from, so if there is an opportunity to eat then you should take it. It’s the old canine instincts coming through. Oh I know that in reality the next meal will be along at 5pm and will look much the same as the one I’ve just had and the one before that, but with these instinctive things it can be hard to see reason, and besides that I like eating. Anyway, there is was an unattended bowl of food, so I did what every other food loving dog would do and I started to eat it. You have never seen something move so fast as Shadow did from where she was still chewing her chew. Before I knew what had hit me, she had at full pelt. She made it clear in no uncertain terms that she was saving that for a little later and had decided to have her chew first. I will not be doing that again in a hurry, food or no food. No dog goes to eat food that bites back and although it wasn’t the food itself, it may as well have been!
I did wonder whether I should point out to her that the whole point of the chew was to clean her teeth after eating, but then I thought I might come over as being a little hypocritical as I’d intended to eat the food myself.
