Happy birthday to all Entlebucher Mountain Dogs everywhere in the world. Today our breed is 100 years old. Yes, I know there were ones before that, but it was on this very day in 1913 that Gritli vom Schlossgut was born and she went on to be the earliest Entlebucher officially recorded in the records of the Swiss authorities. Before that there were dogs described as being of the type ‘Entlebucher’ but we weren’t official. Since then there have been many steps to make us more official. Our very first breed standard was in 1927 but we were pretty much as we are now. Give or take the odd bit of markings that was acceptable back then. This picture is Spiro from 1927. His tail wasn’t docked, we used to be naturally bob-tailed but I’m happy to say that over the years we’ve managed to develop our tails rather beautifully, down to the very special white tip on the end. It is going to be great to get together with other Entlebuchers today to celebrate. We are also getting to see our human grandparents so all in all it’s going to be an excellent day. We did have one disappointment when my Mistress got a call to say the person making the birthday cake for the dogs won’t be able to come, so this time there is cake for the humans but not the dogs. Oh well, we’ll be playing biscuit catch so it isn’t all bad! I shall look forward to telling you all about it and whether I managed to win the biscuit catch or whether the others have been practising so that they can beat me. I think there are going to be some dogs there that I haven’t met before so it may be that they are as good at it, but unless they are Labradors that’s highly unlikely!
