I’m not a cruel dog, it’s just an expression. There’s more than one way to skin a cat. I’m not even sure it’s an expression I should be using, but there it is. Oh we might have a phone charger and now a car charger for the phone, but that doesn’t mean we’ve solved the problem. It’s only any good having a charger if the socket it goes in isn’t faulty. That’s what happens when you fiddle with things and break them. Anyway, if my Mistress plugs the phone into the computer she can still charge it. It’s either that or wedging it at an angle between a pile of books and sticking the charger in with tape. I should be writing a column on a thousand and one uses of duct tape, what with Megan’s paw and now this. Of course there was the boot my Mistress had to stick back together after Megan went through it with her claw on one occasion too. Anyway, I digress. It also seems that my Mistress’s phone is becoming faulty in other ways. I said it may be time for a new phone, but she says she’s only had this one for five minutes, for which you can read ‘two years’ but time flies as you get old. She likes her phone. It’s purple. She’s easily pleased. I said why didn’t she get an i-phone. After all she envies some of the applications her friends use. I should have known it wouldn’t be that easy. You’d like to think she said something like ‘Alfie, I don’t think I should be spending that much.’ But no, she had two reasons against the i-phone. First and foremost – it isn’t purple! Oh dear, what shall I do with her? I was just despairing when she added, ‘Besides I like to be different and everyone else has i-phones.’ At this point I gave up. Being different is fine if it’s because you have thought things through and found a better solution. Of course you should resist following the crowd if that’s the case, but if the crowd is a crowd for a reason, isn’t it better to join them just once in a while?
