IMG_0613The pups are four days old today and already they get the opportunity to make resolutions.

Dear pups,

Only make resolutions that you have the strength to keep. Don’t beat yourselves up by resolving to do the impossible when you could instead have reached for the furthest possible and made yourself feel like a success. There will be times when your owners will want you to change your behaviour, but remember you must change it because you want to change and not because someone made you do it. The most important resolution you can ever make is to be true to yourself and to try your very best. As a breed we always want to please our humans, you will have days when the temptations to do wrong are too great and you will eat the sandwich that is being prepared in the kitchen when their back is turned. You will steal some socks and take them to your own bed. You will climb on the couch when you weren’t supposed to. On those occasions it is always best to own up. Honesty is the best policy, besides if you hang your head in shame and then twist it slightly and look up dolefully with your big brown eyes, you will be forgiven and given a cuddle.

You have been given all the gifts you need to get the best out of your humans. Use them to the full. Sad puppy dog eyes, warm snuggly fur, the ability to squeeze your head through underneath their arm and give them a lick. It won’t just be that they forgive you when you do wrong, you can use these gifts to make them happy and cheer up their bad days. Your job is to be man’s best friend and you have been born with all the willpower you will need to devote yourselves to that job tirelessly – even when they forget you, you will be faithful.

Little pups, on this New Year’s Day, my hope is that you all grow up to be the very best pups you can be and that the world of love you came into will always be a world of love to you in return.

Your loving uncle, Alfie
