Sunday 18th August 2013 – Bruges

I left off yesterday with the onboard toilet suggestion, I’ll tell you a little more about it. Dan, my Mistress’s nephew, doesn’t know which is the most surreal story he’s going to be telling when he gets home; the one which saw him hanging from a railing above a very deep lock, or the one about going out with a carrier bag at 10pm in the dark to gather grass. They brought back three bags of grass and created a little onboard garden for us in the corner of the back of the boat. I was duly taken out to inspect it. ‘Go,’ my Mistress said. ‘What, there? You’ve got to be joking,’ was my reply. ‘Please,’ she said. ‘Not bloody likely,’ I said. When all is said and done I can hold on for quite a long time. She then took Ari out and got much the same response, except I don’t think he swore at her. Anyway, we’d been out once about 8.30 so she said she’s risk it and see what happened. If we wanted to go out in the night she asked us to tell her and she’d take us to the ‘garden’. She let Ari sleep on her bed so he was more settled and we all went to sleep. This morning we got up about 8 and still refused to use the grass. We set off to Bruges and thankfully came to another mooring where it was possible to get us off. Oh was there ever a sense of relief? We were able to carry on, two happy dogs. The grass was duly jettisoned overboard and the whole incident has been put behind us.

We are now moored back in the marina at Bruges and are having a lovely relaxing weekend having a mixture of walks and sleep. We keep meeting people who in their retirement are spending five months of the year on a boat and my Mistress says it sounds awfully appealing. After yesterday, I’m not so sure.
