I’m about 25 in human terms. I’m in my prime. What 25 year old human male would not find an almost on heat woman exciting? Ok, so I know that it’s not quite the same with women, but you all get the pheromones thing, don’t you? You get high on the certain smells. It’s exciting. All the tv adverts seem to tell humans if they spray certain things on their bodies then they will be exciting to other humans. Well in dog terms there is nothing more exciting than the scent of a female dog coming into season. Ok, so I know she’s my mother and there are rules about things like that, but I’m a dog. I can’t help myself. It’s actually at times like this when I stop to think about the implications that I’m probably quite glad I can’t actually do anything about it, although that’s not really a thought I want to pursue. At the moment, waiting for Shadow’s season to start is like living on a knife edge for me. Alfie is taking it in his stride. More to the point he can be found hiding his head under his paw and keeping well out of the way. I on the other paw am sniffing my mother at every opportunity and barking for no apparent reason whatsoever. I can’t stop myself. Alfie is actually quite protective of Shadow and pees over her pee every time she goes out, to cover her scent. He’s rather lovely like that. I on the other paw am just filled with hormonal urges and have to keep reminding myself this is my mother we’re talking about and it’s not the done thing! In some ways I’m quite grateful that she’ll be going away when her season does start. I think being around at the key time would just be unbearable. I think the last time she was here for it, a year ago, I couldn’t have quite hit full hormonal maturity. I suppose I was only around 18 – I had urges but was not so confident in myself. Thank goodness she will be neutered before she has another season. At least by the time our new puppy reaches maturity I will have reached a more sensible age and she won’t be my mother!
