Yes, I meant to write for and not or. If you think we are going to perform tricks and not get a reward then you\u2019ve got another think coming. Anyway, the lovely people at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ardengrange.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Arden Grange<\/a> have sent us a great piece by stunt-dog training expert <a href=\"https:\/\/stuntdogs.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Gill Raddings<\/a> and we thought you might like to read it just as it is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Halloween Dog Tricks for Treats!<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s spooky season, so get the whole family in the <em>spirit<\/em> this Halloween and include your <em>blood<\/em> hound in the fun! Learning tricks with your dog is a great way to play with them and build a strong bond <strong>\u2013 <\/strong>plus you can impress your friends with how clever your dog is! So get your <em>treats<\/em> at the ready, here are four ghoulish <em>tricks<\/em> to get started.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Getting Started&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTeaching your dog tricks is a great way to train them and keep them mentally stimulated. It\u2019s also a wonderful bonding experience for the two of you. Be prepared with some high value treats, such as <strong>Arden Grange Tasty Liver Treat or Crunchy Bites<\/strong>, to keep your dog\u2019s attention. Every dog is different, (some dogs will get it quicker than others). The key ingredient to the perfect trick is patience! Remember: <strong>command, praise, repeat<\/strong> and have fun!\u201d <strong>explains Gill.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><u>I\u2019VE SEEN A GHOST\/HIDE YOUR EYES<\/u><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"http:\/\/alfiedog.me.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Step-3-Hide-your-eyes-scaled.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/alfiedog.me.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Step-3-Hide-your-eyes-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-24092\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Step 1<\/strong> \u2013 With your dog in a sitting position, gently lift one paw with your hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Step 2<\/strong> &#8211; Offer Tasty Liver Treat as you gently bring the paw above the dog\u2019s nose. Encourage the dog to follow the treat and give praise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Step 3<\/strong> &#8211; Bring the paw over the nose and offer the treat from underneath the dog&#8217;s paw. Command &#8216;COVER&#8217;, treat and reward. Practice in short periods, until you no longer need to lift the dog\u2019s paw.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><u>ZOMBIE CRAWL<\/u><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Step 1<\/strong> &#8211; Start with your dog in a DOWN position (lying down, tummy on floor) and get your treats ready!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Step 2<\/strong> &#8211; Gently place your hand on your dog\u2019s back to encourage them to keep shoulders and hips down as they move.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And <strong>Step 3<\/strong> &#8211; Hold treat in front of their nose to coax dog forward. Command &#8216;CRAWL&#8217; and move the treat only slightly forward so the dog follows. Keep hand gently placed on their back. Praise and Reward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Step 4<\/strong> \u2013 Repeat Steps 2-3 and build up confidence and strength slowly. Practice until you can remove your hand from the dog\u2019s back. Be patient, this takes time!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"http:\/\/alfiedog.me.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Step-4-Zombie-crawl.jpg-scaled.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/alfiedog.me.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Step-4-Zombie-crawl.jpg-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-24093\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><u>PLAY DEAD<\/u><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Step 1<\/strong> &#8211; Start with your dog in the down position.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Step 2<\/strong> &#8211; Hold a front paw and gently roll dog onto opposite side, while saying &#8216;FLAT&#8217; command. Praise and reward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Step 3<\/strong> &#8211; Repeat, praise, reward until your dog rolls over without contact (just the command \u2018FLAT\u2019 and appropriate hand gesture). You can then introduce a &#8216;STAY&#8217; command to keep them in position and refine the pose!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/alfiesdiary.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Play-Dead-Sham.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/alfiedog.me.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Play-Dead-Sham-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-24095\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><u>THRILLER \/ SIT UP, SAY PLEASE<\/u><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Step 1<\/strong> &#8211; Start with your dog in a sitting position. Hold the treat between thumb and middle finger whilst using index finger to point up, above the dog\u2019s nose, while saying &#8216;SIT UP&#8217;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Step 2<\/strong> &#8211; Lure with the treat until your dog lifts upper body off the floor. Catch their front paws. Praise, reward, repeat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Step 3<\/strong> \u2013 As confidence builds, slowly remove your support until the dog can maintain sit up position. Gradually put more distance between the dog and the treat.
