Friday Flashback<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
Well it\u2019s Wilma here again with another\nFriday Flashback. The middle of January is a really funny time and I said to\nMum I didn\u2019t suppose I\u2019d find anything very exciting had happened on this day\nin the last thirteen years. Anyway, it turned out I was right and except for\nthe years when Shadow was having puppies or when Ari was still a puppy himself,\nit\u2019s been a quiet week. So here from 104 is some about Shadow\u2019s third litter\nwhen they started to move from milk to solid food<\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n
Three Weeks Old<\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n
The puppies are three weeks old today \u2013 happy\nbirthday puppies.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n
Moving to solids is not proving easy. Last\nyear the puppies were so hungry that it was as though a lightbulb went on for\nthem when my Mistress offered them the puppy gruel and they were all happy\nwithin a few minutes to get stuck in. This year whilst Shadow may not have had\nmuch milk they have liked the milk formula we have made up and found the ease\nof bottle feeding rather suited them. So then they were given the opportunity\nto work a little harder for their food and to move onto something other than\nthe formula they have grown used to and like. It did not go well. They tried\nseveral ways to walk in it and sit in it but very few ways to eat it. Here is\nthe picture from the first attempt yesterday.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\nCosette day 21<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n
Back to the Drawing Board<\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n
At that point my Mistress went back to the\ndrawing board and decided to have an individual session with each puppy using a\nshallow bowl and some of the existing formula that they are used to. Each of\nthem started to understand the basics, but in the meantime the shrill cries of\nthe other five were all a bit too much for everyone, especially my Mistress\nbeing in close proximity. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n
Once she had done that she let them feed from\nShadow as best they could, she\u2019s short of milk again, and then she put down\nsome bowls of their existing formula for them to finish off. Unsurprisingly\nCinderella and Cracker decided to tuck in, but the others seemed confused. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n
A lesson in lapping<\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n
I think they will all need another lesson in\nlapping before they really start to get what it is about. For the time being\nthe old formula and the new one, which includes baby rice, are being run in\nparallel \u2013 although hopefully they will move to the more filling one over the\nweekend. I suppose last year there was no possibility of Shadow going in with\nthem as this is the stage she was ill last year and had to have medication which\nmeant she couldn\u2019t even try to go in with them. That was hard to explain to the\npuppies \u2013 at least this year she is well even if the milk is intermittent.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n
Well that\u2019s all from me. I know that\nlife gets more exciting at the end of the month but you\u2019ll have to wait for\nthat!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
