It turns out that Alfie was a very philosophical puppy. Here are some of his thoughts from when he was still quite young.

2006

Isn’t it funny how every country seems to use words and names from other languages and cultures to make things sound exotic? In England you get food shops with French names and restaurants with Italian names. Kitchen designs are called after regions of other countries and even paint colours can have foreign words for names to make them sound special. Then you go to those other countries that sound so exotic to the English and what do you find. Can you buy a kitchen design called ‘Provence’ or dine in a restaurant called ‘Bella Italiano’? No you can buy a ‘Cotswold’ kitchen and dine in ‘The Pelican Station’. Everyone thinks that everyone else seems more exciting and exotic than they are. I wonder if any country thinks enough of itself to use its own places and language to celebrate everything that is considered special?

You can see where he gets it from when you read some of Mum’s thoughts. Here is what Alfie recounted in 2011

A Little Knowledge

My Mistress has reached an important conclusion. She has realised that the saying ‘A little knowledge is a dangerous thing’ isn’t actually correct. In her words, ‘It isn’t the little knowledge that’s dangerous, it’s the gaping hole in understanding that sits next to it that causes the problems.’ I think she may well have a point!

I did really enjoy reading Alfie’s preparations for Megan’s arrival in 2010. I’ve never met my Aunt Megan but I’ve heard so much about her.

Megan’s Arrival in 2010

Have I washed behind my ears, indeed! What does my Mistress think of me? I always wash behind my ears and I’d given everywhere a special lick ready for Megan’s arrival without having to be asked. I’m as excited about this as she is. Anyway, I have done a tour of the estate to make sure everything is in place ready. Most of it is not exactly in place. Megan’s bed for example is not yet on the floor because my Mistress doesn’t want Shadow getting in it and trying to claim it as her own. Apparently, Megan may recognise my smell as we sent her a soft toy that I had slept with for a few days first, but she hasn’t yet had anything with Shadow’s scent on so that will be more of a surprise.

I’m worrying about what I should say to her when she first arrives. Instinct would tell me to go for the normal doggy approach, sniff her bottom, let her sniff mine and then go out for a game of rough and tumble, but I’m thinking my Mistress is expecting something a bit more dignified. It’s not every puppy that gets to go to Swiss finishing school before joining their new family and I really don’t know what lessons she will have been taught. I wonder if they still do that thing where they walk with a pile of books on their head to make them walk tall and straight. ‘Deportment’ I think it’s called, although that may be where you’re taken back to your own country, I’m not sure.

That’s all from this week’s flashback

Have a great day

Love

Wilma

© 2018 Rosemary J.
